In 2009, Jill Homer set the woman’s course record for the Tour Divide with a time of 24 days 7 hours and 24 minutes. In do so, she added to her deep resume of completed ultra-endurance events and gained more insight into how the mind and the body work together to achieve a goal. “Be Brave Be Strong” tells her story of the preparations leading up to the start and a day by day account of the journey. She describes the tough decisions and the sacrifices to families and jobs, and the physical health required to participate. Her descriptions of the terrain are accurate, not trivialized or exaggerated. Her pace and daily mileage strategy are based on safety and perseverance and could be used as a template for planning. She includes a detailed equipment list at the end of the book. As a participant in the 2011 Tour Divide, I read everything I could about the event for my preparations and highly recommend “Be Brave Be Strong” to anyone considering the event. Get a copy, read it and pass it along your family or friends to help them prepare and support you.
